Design of High Temperature, High Pressure Ash Grinder Case Study

Problem

A gasification plant had problems with start-up caused by plugging in a pneumatic conveying system designed to transport ash generated in the gasifier. During start-up, some of the ash particles were as large as 3” diameter. These large particles plugged  the conveying system. The plant hired KHE to design an ash grinder to crush the larger particles.

Solution

KHE designed a single roll grinder for installation into a custom designed pressure vessel. To accomplish extremely fast turnaround, KHE personnel worked on site at the fabrication shop for concurrent design and fabrication efforts.

Results

The grinder was shipped from the fabrication shop within 38 days of the initial purchase order. Installation of the grinder eliminated large particle plugging.
